16 Psyche is a large asteroid which was discoved by the Italian astronomer Annibale de Gasparis in 1852, and named after the Greek goddess of the soul.
It is one of about a dozen large asteroids in the asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars, with an average diameter of 226 km. Unlike most asteroids which are rocky or icy bodies, 16 Psyche is thought to be mostly (90%) metallic iron & nickel, similar to the Earth's core.
A NASA mission 'Psyche' is due to launch in 2022 and will be the first to study such a metallic body. Due to arrive in 2026 it will hopefully provide data on whether the asteroid is a former planetary core, or unmelted material. The mission will also be the first to use lasers to communicate with the spacecraft, allowing for much greater bandwidth communication than is possible with radio waves.
