M109 is a barred spiral galaxy in Ursa Major, which lies approx. 83 million light years away, making it the most distant object in the Messier catalogue..
About half of all spiral galaxies are thought to be barred, including our own Milky Way. M109 is unusual because it has Ansae bars at each end of the 'barre', which are not usually seen in Sc type spiral galaxies, where the arm structure is still well defined.
In James Clark's 700mm focal length image, NGC3953 can also be seen bottom-left, and the fainter galaxy towards the upper middle of the image (PGC37735) is approx 52 million light years away.
